“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” -Mark Twain
World Whisky Day is a worldwide invitation to celebrate and enjoy whisky (or whiskey if you are from Ireland or referring to American whiskey) by World Whisky Day founder, Blair Bowman. Whether you travel to a big whisky celebration across the globe or have a celebration with friends and family near home, it is a great opportunity to try whiskies you have never heard of and cocktails you have yet to experience while having great craic (a great, enjoyable time) celebrating the “water of life”.
If you want to venture out to celebrate World Whisky Day, here are three locations we recommend:
- Edinburgh, Scotland.
Scotland is home to many exquisite whiskies such as the Balvenie Tun 1509 and the Brulchladdich Black Art 5. Edinburgh is inarguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and whisky is embedded into its very fabric. Whether you choose to sit inside one of their friendly bars for a flight or two, like those at the Usquabae Whisky Bar and Larder, or join fellow foodies at Michael Neave Kitchen and Whisky Bar where local produce and seafood highlight his savory menu along side Michael’s Scottish roots highlighted in the restaurant’s whisky bar, you are sure to be welcomed by local hosts and make lifetime memories with their patrons.
Edinburg is also home to the Whisky Assembly at Teviot Row where whisky lovers will have the opportunity to meet representatives from multiple distilleries, taste their world-class whiskies, and socialize at pop-ups throughout the building. Industry experts and master classes will give visitors the opportunity to learn more about their products in Scotland’s historical capital. If you are up for a tour, walk through Old Town with Mercat Tours. You will learn about the history of whisky in Edinburg, starting with King James IV who gave the city a monopoly on whisky making, through a whisky tasting at the candle-lit Megget’s Cellar. Before you know it, you will become the go-to whisky connoisseur amongst your friends.
- Sydney, Australia
One of the largest registered World Whisky Day events is The Whisky Show at the Stamford Plaza Sydney Airport. An estimated 1500 visitors are planned to attend the largest whisky show in Australia. Whisky, and only whisky, is the sole star of the day. All attendees must be 18 years old and are given a bottle of water, event program, and whisky nosing glass upon entry. This is a serious whisky event, with over 50 brands and more than 200 whiskies to taste (all whisky samplings are included in the ticket price) and purchase and water stations located around the halls. The Whisky Show will also have Master classes and pop-ups selling whiskies at special event prices.
- Vancouver, Canada
Why not bring the love of whisky with the love of Springtime together and join the Keefer Bar in Vancouver’s China Town for their World Whisky Day event. Rated 4 ½ out of 5 stars, this fun and vibrant bar with its excellent staff will make you feel welcome. Not only can you try their array of whiskies, but their creative cocktail menu is the rave of their patrons’ reviews. About 90 minutes away is Whistler’s Black Comb Mountain which will be open until May 21. Skiing in spring conditions and then enjoying the iconic village with dining and shopping is a great way to end a trip to Canada for World Whisky Day.
